2025 Management of Burn Trauma – Live Rehab Track

September 15, 2025 to September 19, 2025

This course features didactic sessions and clinical simulations covering: anatomy/physiology of skin, burn/wound assessment and management, emergency burn & trauma care in the military population, complications with burn trauma, nutrition concerns with burn population, rehabilitation management of burn injuries, surgical aspects of burn trauma and amputations, rehabilitation management of amputations, management of traumatic brain injury, critical care management, with considerations for prolonged field care and resource constraints. At the completion of this course, clinicians will gain an understanding of how to respond to initial burn injury, as well as skin functions and complexity of skin/scar management after burn injury.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician associates/physician assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss the mission and vision of the USAISR Burn Center.
  2. Describe the chest and abdominal assessment process.
  3. Describe spectrum of disease of necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) and calciphylaxis.
  4. Identify burn depth and the stages of wound healing.
  5. Discuss the difference between escharotomy and fasciotomy.
  6. Identify the different types of shock and how Burn Shock differs.
  7. Summarize the care for thermal, chemical and electrical burns.
  8. Describe initial stabilization and fluid resuscitation with resource limitations.
  9. Mitigate complications from fluid shifts and edema with edema management interventions, to include compression and elevation
  10. Bridge the knowledge gap of what “ideal” wound care looks like and how to creatively modify this in a downrange scenario.
  11. Apply acquired knowledge to perform burn wound debridement and dressing placement.
  12. Explain how to provide burn shock resuscitation fluids in a safe and effective manner preventing under and over resuscitation.
  13. Summarize pertinent rehabilitation evaluation components.
  14. Describe the therapists' role and interventions for graft protection of the lower extremity.
  15. Summarize the components of burn rehabilitation in the critical care environment.
  16. Discuss the different phases of the rehabilitation process of the lower limb amputee.
  17. Articulate the characteristics unique to occupational therapy (OT) services provided to those with major limb loss in a military treatment facility.
  18. Summarize the different surgical procedures and utilization for scar reconstruction.
  19. Describe clinical situations in which requesting Maxillofacial Prosthetics support in multidisciplinary care can improve patient quality of life, improve outcomes, expedite healing, and reduce need for additional surgery.
  20. Describe the two types of wound healing and their relevance to contracture.
  21. Describe the psychological impact of burn injury in burn and multiple trauma survivors.
  22. Summarize the six stages of the Progressive Return to Activity (PRA).
  23. Mitigate moral distress from difficult decision-making.
