USCG Pharmacy Seminar

September 9, 2025 to September 11, 2025

Prioritizing the growth and reinforcing pharmacy practice standards, both clinically and operationally, are a top goal in supporting US Coast Guard (USCG) pharmacists to succeed in their positions. This educational activity hosted by USCG Health, Safety, and Worklife (HSWL) Operational Medicine and Force Command will allow USCG pharmacists to meet and discuss new policy, electronic health record pearls, clinical guideline updates, and force readiness support.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the differences in the newest version of the Pharmacy Operations and Drug Control.
  2. Evaluate the processes for standing up Emergency Medical and Tactical Combat Casualty Care at a unit.
  3. Identify strategies for communicating with diverse populations.
  4. Apply active listening techniques in simulated interactions.
  5. Summarize scope and impact Formulary Management has on the TRICARE pharmacy benefit.
  6. Describe the mission and responsibilities of the DoD Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee and the Formulary Management Branch.
  7. Describe the organization and mission of the DHA Formulary Branch.
  8. Explain the steps involved in the DHA Formulary Branch Review Process.
  9. Evaluate a travel itinerary using TRAVAX and develop medication and vaccine recommendations for a specific destination by augmenting Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advisories with USCG and COCOM recommendations.
  10. Compare weight loss medications and navigate the Tricare prior authorization process.
  11. Identify opportunities to fill voids and expand pharmaceutical practice in USCG.
  12. Differentiate between basic USCG basic pharmaceutical services and expanded pharmaceutical services, scope, and reach.
  13. Describe the Unified Pharmacy Leaders Intent.
  14. Relate the goals of Force Design 2028 to the Unified Pharmacy Leaders Intent.
  15. Describe the role of pharmacists in facilitating a ready force.
  16. Identify case examples where USCG pharmacists improved force readiness.
  17. Identify the mission specialties of each Deployable Specialized Forces type.
  18. Explain the chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or explosive (CBRNE) requirements and opportunities for a unit.
