U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory (USACIL): Sexual Assault Kit Updates, Collection and Analysis
This live, virtual activity is intended for Forensic Healthcare Examiners who require ongoing education in forensic science due to constant advancements. This training is provided by a well-known, established expert to improve the knowledge-base and skill-sets for medical forensic evidence collection, focusing on updates and best practices relevant to the medical forensic examination and the forensic field. The goal is to provide real-life situations of forensic relevance encountered to expand and apply the skills necessary using scientific principles and concepts in forensic practice. Together we will develop a shared understanding of our responsibilities in improving forensic healthcare practice. Training is an essential factor contributing to forensic healthcare staff's greater efficiency within the Department of Defense. Active participation in the training series will enhance professional development and productivity.
Target Audience
This activity provides continuing education for Forensic Healthcare Examiners (includes Sexual Assault Medical Forensic Examiners [SAMFEs]) which includes Physicians, Physician Associates/ Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Midwives, Registered Nurses, and IPCE.

- Describe the USACIL’s testing capabilities and the purpose of forensic testing and its role in sexual assault cases.
- Discuss the role and importance of Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) testing in sexual assault investigations.
- Explain the recommendations for best practices in medical forensic evidence collection to assist the crime lab.
