TBICoE Quarterly Education Series: TBI and Mental Health

Prioritizing warfighter brain and mental health through comprehensive care and support is paramount to ensuring service members are physically, mentally, and emotionally prepared to conduct military tasks, build resilience, and contribute to mission success. This educational activity hosted by the Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence (TBICoE) in collaboration with the Psychological Health Center of Excellence (PHCoE) will inform healthcare providers about relevant research, clinical treatment recommendations, and resources available for service members with TBI and co-morbid mental health conditions. Subject matter experts will discuss the correlation between TBI, suicide, and posttraumatic stress disorder. This session will also explore the Department of Defense’s Real Warriors Campaign whose mission is to reduce stigma associated with mental health, amplify suicide prevention efforts, and support military community psychological health and readiness.
Target Audience
This activity provides continuing education for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, athletic trainers, psychologists, certified counselors, physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants, speech language pathologists, audiologists, and social workers. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Summarize the current research and state of the science on traumatic brain injury (TBI) and suicide
- Describe how pre-existing and comorbid factors - such as mental health diagnoses and social determinants of health - can impact TBI recovery and research practices
- Outline treatment considerations, strategies, and recommendations for patients with TBI and co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder and/or suicidal ideation
- Identify mental health resources available to support TBI patients including those available through the Real Warriors Campaign
