TBICoE: Management of Headaches Following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury 2023

Program Description

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can cause a myriad of symptoms that may impact the quality of life of service members. Headache is the most reported symptom following a concussion. This course hosted by the Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence will guide health care providers in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of post-traumatic headache. Materials covered will address both non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic treatments in the deployed and non-deployed settings.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, kinesiotherapists, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the occurrence of post-traumatic headache (PTH) following a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), commonly called concussion.
  2. Distinguish between the common PTH types.
  3. Apply methods to assess, diagnose and manage common PTH types.
  4. Explain non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic treatments.
  5. Summarize treatment guidelines for PTH in deployed and non-deployed settings.
